Editorial Policy
I’m Hans Bauer, the mastermind behind SalaryByCareer.com. I cover careers, earnings, self-employment, and small businesses. My aim is to make financial information clear enough to use without making complicated decisions sound simpler than they are.
How I research articles
I use sources suited to the question I’m trying to answer. Those may include government data, research papers, company filings, industry reports, and interviews. When I cite a figure, I check what it measures, the period it covers, and any limits that could change how a reader interprets it.
I prefer original sources when I can access them. If a claim rests on an estimate or a survey, I identify it as such. I do not present one person’s experience as proof that everyone will get the same result.
How I use examples
Examples help make costs and tradeoffs easier to picture. If I use a hypothetical business or calculation, I’ll make that clear. A sample budget is a way to test an idea, not a prediction of what you will earn or spend.
I also distinguish between revenue, profit, and an owner’s personal income. They’re easy to mix up and can tell very different stories.
Editorial independence
I make editorial decisions based on what is useful and relevant to readers. Advertising or a commercial relationship does not buy a favorable conclusion. If I publish sponsored content, I will label it clearly so readers can identify it.
Corrections and updates
If I find a factual error, I will correct it. When a substantial change affects an article’s conclusion, I will explain the update on the page.
Dates and context matter, especially when an article discusses figures that change over time.
If you spot an error or have evidence that challenges something I’ve written, please use the site’s contact page to let me know. I welcome a good correction, even if I’d rather have caught it first.
Financial decisions
My articles provide general information, not advice tailored to your finances or business. I can explain how a cost, salary figure, or risk works. I cannot know every detail of your circumstances.
For decisions with significant tax, legal, or financial consequences, consult a qualified professional who can review your situation.
